Grand Lake Winter Day... See the Ducks

Today, we are staying inside as much as we can because of the winter storm that is stretching from Oklahoma to the east coast. Here at Grand Lake we had some freezing rain and sleet but it doesn’t seem too bad….yet, anyway.  One of the nice things about living here, is that we know in a matter of days the weather will warm, the ice will be gone, and we could play golf if we wanted to. Of course, we fish year round and on a day like today you could be inside an enclosed, heated fishing dock…. Oklahoma’s version of ice fishing up north.

Next week is the area’s largest boat show which is held in Tulsa. It has everything imaginable.  Northeast Oklahoma, often referred to as “Green Country” has plenty of lakes and Grand Lake is the Grand Daddy and favorite for Oklahomans and visitors from all over the country.

Did you know that Oklahoma ranks in the top five states as far as fresh water surface area is concerned? Surprised? In addition in the past, the Wall Street Journal and Rand McNally have ranked the Grand Lake area in the top ten retirement areas in the country. Surprised? Here’s something else you may not know. Oklahoma ranks 50th in the amount of total taxes paid per capita. Pretty good stuff. When you add in the great friendly people, moderate weather, stable economy, it’s just a place you want to be whether to visit or to come stay.

We’re getting a lot of activity on our web sites with people looking for lakefront homes. The real estate market has remained in good shape here. It’s a good Investment. Because there was so much interest in my last post  “Grand Lake Map“ , where we made it easier to find your lakefront home,  I decided to follow up with this. It seems there are a lot of people who dream of having a lakefront home. Grand Lake is the premier lake in Oklahoma being over 60 miles long and having 1,300 miles of shoreline.  In this blog you will find links to information on Gated Communities and condos at Grand Lake and another map. The Map is Monkey Island and the links will take you to a web page with pictures, a map for location and links to show homes currently listed in the Grand Lake MLS actively for sale. You will also find a little write up about each place. I chose the Monkey Island map because there are more gated communities located there on Grand lake than other areas.  Some people are not interested in a condo or gated arrangement. Grand Lake View from Monkey Island. That

Yesterday was January 3, 2009 and the temperature got up to 78 degrees here at Grand Lake. Wow! No this is not normal this time of year but it does happen in our winters here.  So the golfers were out in force and there were more fisherman on the lake and everyone was loving the great outdoors and the spring like day. I just love Grand Lake. Debbie and I showed one of our listings to a couple again and it looks like they are going to make an offer on a lakefront Monkey Island home with a great main lake view. While walking the dogs I visited with the care taker at Silver Key about the weather, of course, and we talked about the current fishing and the prospects for next spring. He had caught several bass from along our shoreline with one being about 4 lbs just yesterday. We have had very good crappie spawns for the last couple years, so there should be a lot of filet size catches in the spring.  That evening we went to dinner to the Roadhouse Restaurant with some friends who had come to the lake for the week end. They have a prime rib special every Saturday. Good food, good company and a good day here at Grand Lake. Life is good!

It’s true, It’s timeless and one of the things many people want. Whether it’s for retirement, summer vacations, second homes, week end get aways or just for plain fun and relaxing, it is a place at the lake a lot of people want. Grand Lake in Northeastern Oklahoma is the place to be and it is still affordable to a lot of folks. There was an article in the New York Times about it on December 19th of 2008 and a few years ago both the Wall Street Journal and Rand McNally named the Grand Lake area one of the top spots in the nation for retirement. Earlier this year there was an article  on MSN where Oklahoma ranked 50th in total overall taxes. What a combination!  Lakefront properties are also a very good investment and especially lately compared to the stock market. Lakefront homes  and luxury homes and condos have appreciated in value consistently over the years in Grove, Monkey Island, Langley and all points in between. This past week Debbie and I met with Brian Ruth, the publisher of the Chronicle of Grand Lake. The original purpose we had in mind was business with them for next year.  As we thought about everthing, there was more to discuss.  Things beyond promoting our business. Of course we talked about business but more than that we talked about working together to get the word out about Grand Lake and helping people. Yes, we are all about Grand Lake and as we often say, “Selling Grand Lake to the World” . But what is all this natural beauty and great area for without sharing it. We have such a good thing going on here. The reason we have all these great things to do around the lake is because of the people here.  So we will be working together more closely with the Chronicle of Grand Lake, The Grand Lake Area Chamber of Commerce and the Grand Lake Association in helping get the word out about Oklahoma’s best kept secret and fun place. Grand Lake.

We also went to the “Grand Lake Live ” radio show ( FM 96.1, KITO) Friday which was held at the Pine Lodge Resort this time. It was also a Christmas celebration where we had the chance to see many of the movers and shakers around Grand Lake, see old friends and make some new ones. If you haven’t gone to one of these radio shows, do it. See the two “crazy’s” togther, live in action, and have a good time too.

I’m adding a Grand Lake Bulletin Board to a web site I built for Grand Lake www.OfficialGrandLake.com  and experimenting with a possible photo gallery with more than just pictures. I’ll annouce it here when it’s ready. These things keep evolving and getting better with time. Kind of like a fine wine.

Debbie and I have had ANOTHER GOOD YEAR with our business thanks to all of you and a lot of hard work. But to us the work is fun because of you.
